CLASSEN Laminate flooring awarded a PEFC certificate
Having been successfully audited, the CLASSEN group has achieved full certification for the production of its laminate flooring. CLASSEN laminate flooring is now PEFC- certified from forest to fitted floor covering.
"We found it easy to furnish the full Chain-of-Custody certification required by using PEFC- certified forest timber. After all, we have been working together for a long time with forestry businesses already in possession of the relevant sustainability certification," explained the product management team at CLASSEN.
By acquiring the sustainability seal from the PEFC, (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes), the CLASSEN group is showing once more how much importance it attaches to the environment and the sustainable use of the raw material wood.
With more than 52 million hectares under its supervision, the PEFC is the most successful forestry certification system in the world because it covers a greater acreage than any other system.
The decision of the CLASSEN group to opt for PEFC certification is chiefly in response to the stricter ecological impositions and stricter testing procedures applied by independent certification bodies. This means, for example, that pesticides may only be used over large tracts of land as a last resort and only if supported by an expert appraisal. The Forest certificate is based upon the regional woodland report, which is a statement of the actual situation taking into account all ecological and economic factors. The directives for certification are worked out and applied upon the basis of the regional woodland report. Its regional character is another special feature of the PEFC. As a result of this the PEFC attempts to achieve a mixture of woodland with species of tree suitable for, and traditional in, the respective regions.
The raw material, wood, which is grown in the seemingly never-ending forests of the Brandenburg March by applying sustainable cultivation practices, is processed at the MDF works belonging to Fiberboard GmbH located at Baruther into the high-quality product used in the manufacture of laminate flooring produced in the works owned by CLASSEN Industries in the immediate vicinity.
"That is the integrated site as intended by us even when we were still at the planning stage for our works. All the crucial production stages, from the raw material to the packaging of the goods for the wholesalers and ready to be sold for the retail trade are carried out locally in Baruth. This too, is a facet of ecological economy", adds the works manager of CLASSEN-Industries, Carsten Buhlmann. "This type of 'holistic" certification in which regional features are also taken into consideration, and the recognition of integrated environmental protection, is in line with our concept of an integrated and environmentally-sound production process required if the end product is to be considered environmentally compatible. This is because the environmental compatibility of the end product depends entirely upon each link along the entire production chain."
